GIRLS' BRIGADE HISTORY
COMPANY HISTORY
Girls Life Brigade started in Kexborough in 1931.
A Mr Joseph Walker of Kexborough wanted a Christian organisation for girls to be based at the Methodist Church. The Girls Life Brigade was chosen after a visit by a Mrs Turner of Sheffield who gave a talk on the aims of Girls Life Brigade and its officers. Three ladies came forward to help start the company, Mrs Vernon Beaumont, Miss Mildred Beaumont and Miss Muriel Hepworth.
Miss Hepworth took company drill and gave talks whilst Mrs Beaumont and Miss Beaumont led the badge work. Mrs Beaumont was the first captain, a position she held until Miss Hepworth was old enough to become an Officer.
Our Company has only had 6 different captains over the last 80+ years. These have been Mrs Vernon Beaumont, Miss Muriel Hepworth, Miss Muriel Lee, Mrs Doreen Crossley, Mrs Angela Findlow and now myself Mrs Julie Stather. The longest serving of these being Mrs Crossley who did over 40 years as our Captain.
In 1968 Girls Life Brigade changed its name to The Girls Brigade.
